Course Description

This course introduces individuals, government representatives, business people, and representatives of organizations to the complexities of working with First Nations in Canada. By exploring traditional values and protocols in a contemporary context, you are encouraged to broaden your perspective on what is needed to be respectful and successful when working within a First Nation context.

You will learn about the historical struggle of Indigenous Peoples, celebrate their accomplishments, and seek a better way forward together.

Course Outline

In this course, you will:

  • Learn where and how to initiate dialogue with First Nations communities
  • Develop trust and a common approach for community planning and development
  • Understand protocols and customs for doing business with First Nations
  • Gain insights on how and when to respectfully engage First Nations in community events and special occasions

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Work more respectfully and confidently with First Nations communities, groups, and individuals
  • Apply Coast Salish social and governance protocols in various contexts
  • Initiate and foster respectful dialogue and relationships with First Nations
  • Develop and implement community planning and development strategies in collaboration with First Nations
