Course Description

Strategic systems thinking has become an essential skill. In this course, you will be familiar with important theories and a variety of models that can be used to analyze organizational challenges systematically and strategically. While the course is designed with an organizational context in mind, strategic systems thinking applies equally well to social, community, and global issues.  

Course Outline

This course will introduce you to models, perspectives and tools related to systems thinking that will help you think more strategically in complex or crisis situations. During the four weeks, you will work with the following models:

  • Systems Big Picture, Self-Organization and Unintended Consequences
  • The Cynefin Framework
  • Bolman and Deal’s Four Frames 
  • Four Worlds' Medicine Wheel Analysis
  • Barry Johnson's Polarity Management  
  • PWC's DNA Model 
  • Systems Traps

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand what constitutes systems thinking and recognize its importance in strategic directions and decisions for action.
  • Gain comfort with the inevitable paradox and uncertainty that accompanies strategic systems thinking.
  • Recognize when and how a strategic systems thinking tool is relevant.
