Course Description

No single group or person has all the answers to solving the climate crisis. Outdated leadership models often emphasize a singular vision, prioritizing the perspectives of a privileged few.

This course dives deeper into one of ASI’s six Transition Leadership competencies: Collaborative Leadership. It highlights the importance of cultivating networks and engaging with diverse voices, particularly those most affected by climate change, to draw on a broader range of perspectives for meaningful climate action.

Course Outline

Module 1: Creating the Conditions for Collaborative Leadership

  • Examining power and privilege in leadership
  • Applying the concept of “communityship”
  • Practicing self-reflection as a leader

Module 2: Nature as a Model, Mentor, and Collaborator

  • Applying the practice of “biomimicry” to partnerships.
  • Looking to nature for leadership insights.
  • Infusing leadership with living systems.

Module 3: Leading with Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

  • Addressing the role of DEI in climate action.
  • Identifying inclusive collaboration approaches and strategies.
  • Raising critical questions for a just transition.

Module 4: Collaboration Beyond Consultation

  • Exploring approaches for engaging stakeholders.
  • Discussing practices for decolonizing leadership.
  • Understanding dominant systems of oppression.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explore what collaboration means in the context of complex sustainability challenges.
  • Understand inclusive approaches for engaging those who are most impacted by climate change.
  • Reflect on the role of power, diversity, and inclusion in taking collaborative climate action.
  • Examine your leadership role as a learner, collaborator, convenor, and facilitator.
  • Apply the concepts of biomimicry to enhance approaches to collaboration and partnerships, inspired by nature’s cooperative strategies.
