Course Description

In this course, offered by The Climate Risk Institute, you will gain an overview of legal and policy frameworks created to mitigate and adapt to climate change. You will explore existing and emerging legal obligations and issues relevant to infrastructure professionals at the municipal, provincial, federal, and international levels.

You will dive into the roles and responsibilities of infrastructure professionals, including engineers and planners, and learn how to adapt your practices to incorporate climate change, reduce exposure to potential negligence lawsuits, and fulfill your professional practice obligations. Additionally, you will examine municipal and corporate issues relating to climate change, such as risk disclosure requirements, asset management, and director and officer obligations.

Course Outline

In this course, you will:

  • Gain an overview of legal and policy frameworks for climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Explore your roles and responsibilities as an infrastructure professional in relation to climate change
  • Understand risk disclosure requirements and asset management practices
  • Learn about director and officer obligations in the context of climate risk
  • Examine municipal, provincial, federal, and international climate change issues

By the end of this course, you'll be able to:

  • Understand the extent and relationship of climate policy and legislation to your practice as an infrastructure professional
  • Grasp climate change mitigation and adaptation frameworks at various governmental levels
  • Analyze climate hazard and law through the legal system, including aspects of common law such as negligence, tort, class actions, and defenses
  • Recognize your professional responsibilities including risk minimization, avoidance of negligence, standard of care, and professional obligations
  • Expand your knowledge of codes and standards, including municipal or corporate disclosure requirements
  • Appreciate the benefits of interdisciplinary collaborations in addressing climate change impacts
