Course Description

Facilitating Learning Online (FLO) - Fundamentals focuses on developing your teaching skills for asynchronous online learning. You will learn strategies to create active learning environments online, facilitate or co-facilitate pre-designed learning activities, and receive feedback from your peers.

This course is ideal for core faculty, associate faculty, and staff in facilitation or support roles of online or blended courses, regardless of your experience level.

Course Outline

In this course, you will:

  • Build and sustain online communities
  • Learn methods to foster engagement and interaction among students
  • Support diverse learners online
  • Discover strategies to meet the needs of various learner profiles
  • Facilitate collaborative and individual learning
  • Explore techniques for guiding group work and supporting independent study
  • Provide effective feedback and assessment
  • Develop skills for delivering constructive feedback and evaluating student performance
  • Manage the online course environment
  • Gain insights into organizing and maintaining an effective online learning space

Notes

  • Time requirement: Expect to spend 6-13 hours per week on course activities for five weeks.
  • Those with no prior online teaching and learning experience may need to invest more time. Continuous, active participation each week is necessary for a successful learning experience for everyone.
  • There may be occasional synchronous sessions during this course, which will be recorded for those who cannot attend live.
