Course Description

Every supervisor and manager is a leader and one of the critical qualities of effective leaders is self-awareness. This course is an opportunity to step out of your busy daily life and reflect on the capabilities you bring to your role, namely, your strengths. Learn the Situational Leadership Model (Hersey and Blanchard) and discover what power is and its relationship to leadership. Examine different leadership styles, motivational value systems and value-relating styles through strength management and the self-worth model.

Course Outline

Leadership & Power: Power- what is power and its relationship to leadership The bases of power and how we use them The Situational Leadership Model developed by Paul Hersey and Kenneth H. Blanchard The Leader Effectiveness and Adaptability Description (LEAD): Dominant leadership style and supporting styles Directive behaviours and supportive behaviours Style range and style adaptability The importance of style adaptability in relation to follower capability Relationship Awareness & Strength Deployment: Relationship Awareness Theory developed by Elias Porter The Strength Deployment Inventory: Motivational value systems and value relating styles Strength management The self-worth model Borrowed and mask relating styles Style shifts in conflict situations

Learner Outcomes

Leadership & Power: Identify their dominant leadership style and describe its implications for their work team, their managerial colleagues, and the organization Apply from their style range the most effective leadership style for each common supervisory/managerial situation Identify the seven bases of power and cite examples of the effective use of each Relationship Awareness & Strength Deployment: Describe the four premises of Relationship Awareness Theory Identify what motivates them and how they express that externally Use the self-worth model to make more informed choices about personal behaviour Identify a few key relationships and plan at least one thing they can do differently to be more effective in each relationship
