Course Description
Intrigued by lichens and wanting to know more about them? In this course, you will learn how to identify lichens, distinguish them from other organisms, understand their role in local ecosystems, and explore their uses as food, medicine, and tools.
This course is ideal for those new to lichens or at a beginner identification level.
Course Outline
In this course, you will:
- Understand the biology and physiology of lichens
- Learn to identify lichens, distinguish them from other organisms, and recognize their habitats
- Identify common local lichens and the three major lichen groups
- Practice hands-on identification skills using tools and techniques
- Explore ethnolichenology, discovering how lichens are used as food, medicine, and tools by humans and others
Learner Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Recognize and understand the basic biology and physiology of lichens
- Identify lichens and differentiate them from other organisms
- Understand the habitats and ecological roles of lichens
- Identify common local lichens and categorize them into major lichen groups
- Apply practical identification skills using various tools and techniques
- Appreciate the ethnolichenological uses of lichens as food, medicine, and tools

- Wear clothing and shoes that will keep you dry and warm while moving slowly outside

- Participants will spend part of the course outdoors
