CLIM070 - Management of Climate Risk for Infrastructure Practitioners
Course Description
This course offered by the Climate Risk Institute and delivered by leading infrastructure and climate change resilience experts addresses the societal importance of risk-informed decision-making, introduces a diverse set of risk management frameworks, and reviews the main principles and definitions underlying risk and, more specifically, public and asset risk management.
The course reviews a spectrum of frameworks and approaches for risk analysis, analytical tools used in risk assessment, and; explores trade-offs in choices among risk assessment methods. The course provides insight into common human errors in reasoning about probability and risk. Using relevant case study examples, the course works through all key stages of risk assessment and management.
An important aspect of this course is review and practical application through case study of the theory and practice of risk communication.

These credentials will be of interest to engineers, planners, architects, and other professionals who are involved in the planning, procurement, design, operation, maintenance, management, and regulation of built or green infrastructure, the assessment of climate risk at multiple scales, and the identification and implementation of climate change adaptation strategies or actions.
About IRP Credential.
The Infrastructure Resilience Professional (IRP) Credentialling Program has been designed to help engineering professionals strengthen the knowledge and competencies they require to advance climate-resilient approaches for the planning, design, and management of infrastructure. The IRP program and credentials is managed independently by the Climate Risk Institute. To obtain the IRP credential, individuals must successfully complete six courses, demonstrate experience related to climate change and infrastructure, and be a licensed as a Professional Engineer in good standing in Canada.
Learner Outcomes
- Develop an understanding of foundational risk assessment and risk management concepts and definitions, and link that to infrastructure practice and climate risk;
- Recognize diverse risk management frameworks and approaches, and the continuum of risk assessment processes, and understand application to practice;
- Develop risk analysis skills, including estimating probability for complex events;
- Acquire knowledge and skills related to risk judgment, tolerability, and communication; and,
- Describe common errors, and challenges in risk assessment, management, and communication.
