CLST075 - Community Heritage Fundamentals for BC Practitioners
Course Description
Gain the skills and knowledge to become an informed decision-maker on the conservation of heritage in your community. This new course, offered in partnership with Heritage BC, features shared knowledge from heritage professionals with experience across the province.
In an engaging collaborative environment, facilitated by Dr. Geoffrey Bird, you will build skills in understanding and applying legislation, working with diverse community stakeholders, including Indigenous partners, and integrating heritage values in decision making.
With a focus on case studies and meaningful discussions, you will gain the confidence to make inclusive and thoughtful heritage decisions that support your evolving community.

Course Outline
In this course you will:
- Gain insights into the application of heritage tools at a community level
- Learn how to incorporate heritage values in community planning
- Develop strategies for finding common ground around heritage with others in your community
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Express a current understanding of key terms and related values: Inclusive, Values-Based Heritage, Indigenous Heritage Values, Intangible Cultural Heritage.
- Knowledge of municipal tools, structures and roles associated with heritage decision-making in BC
- Describe and appropriately apply the heritage tools outlined within the Local Government Act
- Assess, integrate and/or provide appropriate feedback on existing policies and community plans
- Engage responsibly and sensitively in truth and reconciliation, and incorporating Indigenous Heritage values within heritage decision-making
- Identify how to appropriately implement a community engagement process
