Course Description
Find out about the players and behind-the-scene workings of the film industry in this union-required introductory course. Learn who’s who on the set, develop your set etiquette, and the established protocols of set safety. Explore the various jobs in the business and the realities of working in the industry. You will leave with the tools needed to decide if film is for you. If the answer is "yes", you'll have the confidence needed to feel comfortable on your first day on set.
Course Outline
This comprehensive one-day course stresses foundational must-know information of the workings on any fast-paced film set and is required by all film unions and guilds in B.C. The motion picture industry has high expectations of crew members, their knowledge and expertise, in order to “get the shot and make the day.”
Course topics include:
- current filming information,
- growth and trends in the industry,
- its collaborative nature,
- demands and challenges facing production crew,
- job descriptions,
- on-set language,
- location respect,
- reading and understanding a call sheet, and
- on-set safety considerations and protocols for stunts and special effects.
This immediately practical information could save you on your first week of work.
The cost of this course is $75.00. This does not include the $50 exam fee which is payable to ActSafe when you register for the online exam. The exam will no longer be part of the in-class curriculum. Instead, the exam will be administered online by ActSafe, and you will be able to take the exam once your course attendance has been verified.
A course completion certificate will be issued digitally by ActSafe upon successful completion of the online exam. Paper wallet cards will no longer be mailed out, however, the digital version will contain a printable wallet card if you wish to have a hard copy. Course completion records will be available for unions and employers to verify through an online search immediately upon completion of the exam.
