Can I Eat That Mushroom? A Mycological Adventure

Interested in fungi? Curious to know more about the colourful and mysterious mushrooms you see in your lawn or on hikes? This hands-on, practical and fun course is for beginners and also for those who know a few mushrooms but want to learn more. We will spend time both in the classroom and in the forest introducing the fascinating life histories of fungi, providing techniques for identifying mushrooms, and more.

Topics Covered:

  • What, Why & How:  Fungal biology and ecology basics
  • Identification: Mushroom field identification skills - integrating learning and hands-on practice in the classroom and in natural habitats (key ID features, habitat, habit, lookalikes & etc.)
  • Edibles:  Identifying local edible and poisonous species
  • Nature observation: Principles and best practices
  • Ethnomycology: Discussion of culinary, medicinal and other uses of fungi, including collection, sustainability, preservation, and safety
  • Resources: Recommendations and how-to’s on keys, field guides, online resources and “communities of practice”

Preparation and what to bring:

  • Mushrooms for identification and classroom study/practice. Prior to class, please store in paper or wax paper in fridge or cool area (no plastic bags and not in freezer)
  • Wear clothing and shoes that will keep you dry and warm while moving slowly outside
  • Additional information will be sent to registered participants prior to the class
